The Haircut

I had been fighting against a haircut for at least 5 months now.  It probably would have happened sooner but I got some sympathy from the accident.  Finally Cherilyn wouldn't accept my excuses any longer.  We took Sydney to get a haircut on Thursday.  She did really well while we were there.  The baby hair styling professional put on an episode of Elmo, and before I knew it Sydney was done and no longer had hair in her eyes.  As long as we only have to do this once a year I think I'll be ok. 

Also I nearly forgot that Tuesday was doctor day.  I had what will hopefully be my last visit to the doctor for a long while.  My holes have finally healed up.  So now I can concentrate on trying to improve my strength.  Hopefully I'll be able to do a sit up in a month or two.  Sydney also had her 12 month checkup.  I think I blocked this out because she had to have 6 shots.  She did well with the shots, and she is 23.13 lbs, 31.2 in, and her head is 44.5 cm.  That is 75th % in weight, 99th % in height, and 50th % in head circumference.  We didn't take pictures at the doctor, but here are the haircut pics.

How to Spoil a Baby

A grandparents job is obviously to spoil their grandchildren as much as possible.  This is not in dispute.  However I had not seen it done to the extent that I witnessed last weekend.  Here in 3 easy steps are the instructions for spoiling a baby.

Step 1: Be in the vicinity of the baby.  Whether that means you going to them or them coming to you.

Step 2: Bring gifts to the baby.  The amount of gifts should be described with words like stupendous, ridiculous, massive, and gargantuan.  For example.  The grandparents brought the baby a ridiculous amount of presents.

Step 3. Give gifts to the baby.  Please note that without step 3 this would just be cruel.

Birthday Cupcake

Sydney got to enjoy a birthday cupcake today. She was timid with it at first, but once I broke it apart into smaller pieces she started to go to town.

Turkey Trauma

There I was, sitting, enjoying my daughter's first birthday.  Suddenly the phone rings.  Who is it but G-Pops.  He is calling to tell me about turkey bags and how wonderful they are when roasting gobblers.  I thanked him graciously for the information.  I also innocently mentioned that I was planning on soaking the turkey in brine overnight.  I was told by multiple people that brining would result in moist delicious tryptophan-laden turkey meat.  As soon as I mentioned my plan, there was an outburst through the phone.  My previously adoring mother and formerly gracious sister-in-law were yelling at me.  I was overwhelmed and in a daze from all the loud noises, but I'm pretty sure these are direct quotes.  "You can't brine a turkey! You can't even assemble a sandwich!"  "You're going to give yourself food poisoning and then we are going to laugh at you"  "Bags are the future, Brining is for crotchety old people!  Get with the Times Loser!" 
Needless to say, I was shocked by the outrage a simple brining could cause.  I attempted to explain the osmotic deliciousness that would take place overnight in the fridge, but once again my sanity, ability, and height were called into question.  Tearfully, I said goodnight and wished them a Happy Thanksgiving.  The next morning, I roasted the Turkey and enjoyed the most delicious bird I've ever had on Thanksgiving.  I have quotes from some famous people that also enjoyed brined Turkey.

Maybe next year I won't be criticized for turkey preparation.  It will probably be on proper Yam storage after dinner.
